The Knoxville Bicycle Facilities Plan was developed in 2015 to assist in advancing
Knoxville as a city where biking is safe, convenient, and a desirable mode of
transportation for residents and visitors. The City understands that biking is a key component of a diverse transportation network, promoting healthy lifestyles and making its streets more vibrant and attractive. For people to choose biking over other modes of transportation, facilities must be provided that are safe, comfortable, and aesthetically pleasing, while also connecting logical desire lines between recognized origins and destinations. A hierarchy of bicycle facilities must be planned, designed, and implemented that provide access and mobility to all users, regardless of age or ability,
allowing for a more personable travel experience, patronage of businesses, and the pursuit of active, healthy lifestyles.
The Knoxville Bicycle Facilities Plan was a collaborative effort of the City of Knoxville and the Knoxville Regional Transportation Planning Organization (TPO). The Plan is intended to provide a framework of physical infrastructure improvements to make Knoxville a safer and more comfortable place to bicycle for both recreation and transportation.

BIKE LANE SWEEPING
Bike lanes are swept on regular intervals throughout from spring through fall. If a
bike lane is in need of sweeping between the scheduled sweeping intervals, please
call 311 or 865-215-4311 to report the location needing swept. Requests can also
be made through the
My Knoxville Mobile App or through the
online request form.
BICYCLE FRIENDLY COMMUNITY AND CITY RATING
In 2023, The League of American Bicyclists recertified the City of Knoxville as a Bronze Level
Bicycle Friendly Community. The report card, showing a summary of how this certification
was scored, along with suggestions for improvement,
can be found here. This
certification is valid until 2027.
The City was also assessed by People for Bikes in their annual City Rating. The
City's scorecard can be found here.
BICYCLE INFRASTRUCTURE PROJECTS
The City currently has numerous projects being designed and under construction. Please see the
City's Capital Improvement Project list for information on all current projects.
In 2023, the City converted the existing bike lanes on Council Place (0.2 miles) and N. Broadway (0.35 miles)
to protected bike lanes by adding vertical separation to the painted buffer. An article about the

In 2021, the City installed its first protected bike lane on East Hill Viaduct (0.1 miles).
