The City of Knoxville promotes public safety education through Safety City, where every 2nd-grade child is able to spend a full day learning traffic and personal safety from the Knoxville Police Department, and home and fire safety from the Knoxville fire Department.

We stress the importance of matches as a tool not a toy. We promote to the homeowner the use of smoke detectors in every residential structure. The department has a program through its Fire Prevention Bureau that provides and installs free smoke detectors for the elderly, indigent and low-income families with small children.
