In the fall of 2010 the City of Knoxville applied for a $400,000 grant from the Environmental Protection Agency to do an area wide assessment of the Downtown North I-275 Redevelopment area for brownfield sites.
In the fall of 2011 the city was awarded the grant with $200,000 dedicated to sites potentially contaminated by hazardous products and $200,000 for sites impacted by petroleum products.
The contract period for this grant will run for three years until the fall of 2014.
This grant will be used to conduct Phase 1 and Phase 2 environmental analysis on selected properties to further the goal of putting contaminated sites back to productive use.
