HOLIDAY & OTHER ALERTS: The Solid Waste Facility will be closed on Saturday, August 31st and Monday, September 2nd.

The Transfer Station has a construction project beginning on August 19th, 2024. Be prepared for possible delays and increased wait times during this period. Delays should be expected through November.

Additionally, loads weighing over two tons are no longer accepted.

All visitors must always drive across the scale.


The Solid Waste Facility only accepts credit or debit cards—NO CASH.


FEES
  • Minimum fee of $1. Debit or credit cards only. No American Express and NO CASH.
  • Garbage, Construction, & Demolition Debris - $70 per ton
  • Shingles or Shingles Combined with Other Waste - $80 per ton
  • Appliances Containing Refrigerant - $70 per ton
  • Scrap Metal & Appliances without Refrigerant - no charge

*FREE FOR CITY RESIDENTS DAY

The first Saturday of each month, unless closed due to a holiday, is Free for City of Knoxville Residents Day. No County residents or commercial businesses may use the facility on these days due to high traffic volumes and the scales being closed. Please be prepared to show proof of City residence.
  • No commercial vehicles or waste
  • No dump trucks
  • No trailers over 2,500 lbs (gross weight)
  • No shingles
  • No brush
  • One visit per household (no exceptions)
  • Please expect long lines

MATERIALS NOT ACCEPTED AT THE TRANSFER STATION INCLUDE 
  • Asphalt
  • Commercial hazardous waste
  • Contaminated soil
  • Dead animals
  • Lighting ballasts
  • Loose, blown insulation (including bagged insulation)
  • Loose Styrofoam (all Styrofoam must be bagged)
  • Mattresses: no more than four per customer/business per day
  • Medical waste (including oxygen tanks)
  • Railroad ties
  • Sludge
  • Tires: no more than four per customer/business per day
  • Large amounts of rock, brick, concrete, or dirt (Limited to two wheelbarrows full per vehicle trip. Any more than that amount cannot be accepted since it will damage the machinery we use to process materials.)
  • Yard waste

RULES / REGULATIONS

  • This is a non-smoking facility.
  • All vehicles are required to cross the scales and must be able to unload in 30 minutes or less.
  • For liability purposes, City employees cannot help unload any items.
  • Residential, commercial trash, and construction materials may be brought to the Transfer Station.
  • The City reserves the right to refuse any materials.
  • No loads over 4,000 lbs.
  • All vehicles are required to separate recyclables, tires (limit of 4 per day), building materials, construction/demolition debris, and any other material as directed by the attendant and unload them in appropriate areas of the facility.
  • No material may be removed from the Solid Waste Facility.
