City's New Curbside Recycling Program is Off to a Great Start

Posted: 11/23/2011
Knoxville's new curbside recycling program is off to a bang-up start. Participation and tonage has increased consistently over the first seven weeks of collection for a total of 819.6 tons so far. When the City combines the curbside, downtown CBID and the recycling drop centers together, approximately 600 tons of additional material has been diverted from landfills since the first of October.

As this Thanksgiving holiday season approaches, the City wants to remind citizens that approximately 65% of food packaging is recyclable through this program. "Many people get in a rush around the holiday season trying to get ready for company and family gatherings," says David Brace, deputy director public service. "But our increased consumption of food and other holiday shopping can result in a lot of recyclables for both our curbside and drop center programs."
