City Celebrates Citizenship Day, Embraces Diversity

Posted: 09/19/2016
The City of Knoxville helped with the national celebration of Citizenship Day (Sept. 16) and Welcoming Week (Sept. 17-23), which brings together immigrants and U.S.-born residents in a spirit of unity.

Citizenship Day

The aim is to raise awareness of the benefits of cultural diversity and welcome everyone – all new Americans, ranging from immigrants on the path to citizenship, to students from foreign countries, to refugees fleeing violence or natural disasters.
"Knoxville is an open-minded, big-hearted and welcoming community," Mayor Rogero said. "We are a part of a nation of immigrants, and as a nation, we shine brightest when we gladly welcome those newcomers who yearn to make the United States their adopted home. Our generous nature does not go unrewarded. When we welcome new Americans, we receive much in return. We’re enriched by their talents and contributions. Cultural diversity makes us stronger and better."

Last year, there were 245 events in more than 80 communities during Welcoming Week, with more than 22,000 people participating.
