Week 28: Annunciation Wing Demolition Continues
Last week, Environmental Abatement Inc. crews completed demolition activities inside the Central Wing Annex, and Renascent employees completed the removal of the Central Wing patient tower.
This week, Renascent continues its work at the center of the former St. Mary's Hospital campus. Its workers are demolishing the Annunciation Wing (pictured below) and sorting debris from the Central Wing.
Roughly half the vacated hospital campus is being razed. The outdated and unneeded buildings on the northern end of the North Knoxville site are coming down, making room for future private development.
The stately original 1929 Building, though, will stand freely, uncovered from the decades of hospital expansion that mostly hid it from view. The 1929 Building (below) will anchor the future private investment.
The structures on the south end of the site - the Central Wing Annex, Professional Office Building and Women's Pavilion - are being repurposed. The Police Department will be housed here, as well as Fire Department administration, Pension System and some E-911 operations. City Court will be housed in a new space to be constructed off of the C-Wing Annex and Professional Office Building, and the hospital garage is being preserved as well.
Other work happening at the Public Safety Complex site this week: EAI will continue working inside the Woman's Pavilion. Messer Construction will continue working on temporary barriers in the 1929 Building while also removing the stairwell in the Central Wing Annex. NEO Corp. crews are continuing abatement in the North Wing.
