Week 26: Last Part of Central Wing Patient Tower Coming Down
The photos from the Public Safety Complex construction site are becoming increasingly dramatic. This week, Renascent crews are tackling the demolition of the last part of the Central Wing patient tower.
The City is investing $40 million to transform the vacated St. Mary's Hospital site in North Knoxville into a new Public Safety Complex, which will house Police, Fire, City Court and Pension System operations. The investment improves City efficiency, but it also protects the neighborhood from the unused site becoming blighted.
The City also is investing $6.5 million to raze unneeded old buildings on the northern end of the hospital campus that can't be repurposed. The iconic 1929 Building is being preserved. The plan is for that half of the property to eventually be privately redeveloped.
Lincoln Memorial University is converting the Magdalen Clarke Tower into classrooms.
Meanwhile, here's a rundown of other work happening on the construction site this week:
Environmental Abatement Inc. is completing removal of equipment from the top floor of the Professional Office Building while also working on the fourth floor and pulling light fixtures from the stairwells.
Pictured here is the first floor of the Women's Pavilion, where EAI was working last week.
In addition to taking down the C-Wing patient tower, Renascent this week will be doing demolition work in the Annunciation Wing and continuing to sort and remove debris.
NEO Corp. crews will continue abatement work in the St. Joseph Wing.
