Bryar Hill of Alcoa Arrested for Aggravated Kidnapping on Saturday Morning

Bryar Hill, 18 of Alcoa, Tennessee, was charged with two counts of aggravated kidnapping after Knoxville Police Department officers and 9-1-1 dispatchers located and intercepted the vehicle he was occupying with two female victims early Saturday morning.

The investigation that was led by the KPD Violent Crimes Unit concluded that the following occurred. At around 3 a.m. on Saturday, October 30, Hill, the two female victims, ages 24 and 22, respectively, and a male witness got into the victim’s vehicle to drive to another location. Soon after, Hill reportedly became belligerent and aggressive. While the vehicle was traveling onto the ramp to 129 North from Kingston Pike, Hill pulled out a handgun, pointed it at all of the occupants and demanded that they take him where he wanted to go. Hill then pistol whipped one of the victims as she was still driving the vehicle. Hill told the victim and other occupants to not call the police or he would kill them, and also demanded that each of the occupants give him their cell phones. He also fired a round from his handgun out of the driver’s side rear window.

One of the victims dialed 9-1-1, but was unable to speak to the 9-1-1 operator. The line remained open, which allowed 9-1-1 operators and responding officers to locate the vehicle at Western Avenue and University Avenue at around 3:25 a.m. Officers stopped the vehicle and took the suspect into custody without further incident. Following further investigation by Violent Crimes Unit detectives, the suspect confessed to the allegations and was charged with two counts of aggravated kidnapping.

“We are very proud of our team members that helped facilitate the flow of information from the open line 911 call to our center,” Knox County 9-1-1 Director Brad Anders said. “The ability to recognize that something was wrong with no two-way communication on the line and to facilitate a coordinated response with KPD shows the level of skill and commitment we have in our 911 communications center.”

“I am thankful for the 9-1-1 dispatchers and our officers for their collective efforts to intervene in this situation with the very limited information that they had at hand,” Chief of Police Eve Thomas said. “There is no doubt that those efforts brought this incident to the most successful outcome possible and likely prevented a much greater tragedy.”
