Merchants Decorate Cumberland Avenue to Welcome Back Students, Vol Fans

On Tuesday morning, a trio of Cumberland Avenue enthusiasts tied and installed more than 100 bows.

The bow-tying was a labor of love, according to the ribbon crew - Helen Morton with University Liquors, Becky Rehorn with Vaughn & Melton, and Anne Wallace, the City's project manager overseeing the Cumberland Avenue reconstruction.

CAMA's intent was to welcome back the University of Tennessee students for the fall semester, celebrate the start of a new Vol football season and remind everyone that Cumberland Avenue is open for business.

The City’s $17 million reconstruction of Cumberland Avenue is modernizing aging infrastructure and changing the existing four-lane street to a three-lane cross section with a raised median and left-turn lanes at intersections. Sidewalks will be widened and landscaped, and utility lines relocated, to create a more attractive, safer, pedestrian-friendly corridor.

The project is on schedule, and at least one lane is open in each direction along the length of Cumberland for the duration of the reconstruction.

Traffic is flowing steadily as the Cumberland Avenue reconstruction progresses on schedule. An eastbound lane of traffic opened on the western end of Cumberland prior to UT students' return for the fall semester.
