Tonight: Free Showing of Documentary About Civil Rights Hero Viola Liuzzo
Viola Liuzzo was a 39-year-old housewife and mother of five children when she drove from Detroit to Selma, Ala., to volunteer in the march to Montgomery for voting rights in 1965. She was murdered by members of the Ku Klux Klan while shuttling marchers and volunteers to airports and bus stops.
Tonight, there will be a free screening of
Home of the Brave
, a 2004 documentary about Liuzzo, at 6 p.m. at the East Tennessee History Center, 601 S. Gay St. Popcorn and soft drinks will be provided.
The program is part of the City of Knoxville's ongoing commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965. For the full calendar of events, see
