In partnership with the City of Knoxville and the Department of Energy's Oak Ridge National Laboratory, students from Austin -East High School participated in speed -mentoring sessions and tours of the laboratory and visited exhibits at the American Museum of Science and Energy in Oak Ridge, as part of the national My Brother's Keeper initiative.
Knoxville's Save Our Son's program is a local My Brother's Keeper affiliate that works with community partners to address persistent opportunity gaps and eliminate violence-related deaths among boys and young men of color.
A goal of the national My Brother's Keeper initiative is to connect young people to mentoring and support networks and to instill a passion for science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) and innovation.

"I hope that students use this experience to envision themselves in careers that they had not considered before," said Save Our Sons program manager, Jackie Clay. "There is no reason that these students cannot be part of the next generation's cutting edge technology in transforming energy here at Oak Ridge National Laboratory or in any science, technology, engineering or math related field. I hope today's experience shows them that the sky is the limit when setting goals for the future."
