Solo in the Park 2015 Offers Autocross Weekend Racing at Chilhowee Park

For East Tennesseans with a passion for cars and/or a thirst for competition, one upcoming event may prove to be the ideal weekend activity.

Solo in the Park 2015, the seventh regional race this year held by the East Tennessee Region Sports Car Club of America, takes place at the Midway at Chilhowee Park on Saturday, July 11, and Sunday, July 12, and offers competition for everyone from first-time racers to Solo veterans.

Solo, also known as Autocross, is a race in which drivers attack – at full speed – a course laid out by orange cones.

According to the ETRSCCA’s website, Solo is the SCCA’s most popular motorsport, and participants don’t need racing experience or high-end vehicles: Any car in “decent shape” can be used, helmets are available for rental, and no experience is required (though minors, both racers and spectators, need to bring a waiver, available on the website, signed by parents).

Gates for the event open at 8 a.m. Saturday. Participants can register online prior to the event, and the entry fee is $25 for SCCA members and $40 for non-members. Competitors are also required to help work the event.
