Neighborhood Groups Donate Meals Via Virtual Challenge
During this season of giving, Neighborhood Advisory Council member Morgan Wilson wanted to find a way that she and her Parkridge neighbors could help residents who are experiencing hunger during the pandemic.
Wilson chose
Second Harvest Food Bank of East Tennessee
as the recipient of neighbors’ donations; its website allows users to set up challenges and goals in order to engage in friendly competitions for fundraising and providing meals to people in need.
Wilson thought other neighborhood groups might want to join the
Knoxville Neighborhoods Virtual Food Drive
and challenge their own neighbors to donate meals. Indeed, Adair Park signed on next.
She shared the idea with the Office of Neighborhood Empowerment, which always seeks to spread the word about neighbors’ projects and creative ideas through its Neighborhood Advisory email newsletter.
Within a week, 10 neighborhood groups were part of the Knoxville Neighborhoods Virtual Food Drive with more than 20,000 meals raised for Second Harvest to provide to area households.
Thanks to Morgan, her neighbors and the neighborhoods across the city who are working together to solve problems, like hunger, that are keenly felt during the pandemic.
