PARKing Day 2019
PARKing Day 2019
The second year of PARKing Day in Knoxville coincided with cooler temps, allowing everyone to enjoy the creativity along Gay Street on Friday, Sept. 21.
Parking spaces along the street were transformed into small spaces that showcased everything from native plants to creative balloon art mimicking a camping space.
This was the second year for the event, presented by the East Tennessee chapter of the American Institute of Architects and the East Tennessee Community Design Center.
Earthadelic, a local landscaping company, showcased native plants
According to the event's Facebook
page
, PARKing Day is an annual open-source global event where citizens, artists and activists collaborate to temporarily transform metered parking spaces into “PARK(ing)” spaces: temporary public places such as pocket parks and parklets.
The mission of PARKing Day is to call attention to the need for more pedestrian oriented open space in the urban environment, to generate critical debate around how public space is created and allocated, and to improve the quality of urban human habitat.
