UT Homecoming Parade Bolstered by Cumberland Avenue Merchant Participation

The pedestrian bridge spanning over Cumberland Avenue offered a nice vantage point for the UT Homecoming Parade route held on Friday, Nov. 2, the, but the big crowds were huddled along sidewalks between 18th Street and E. Volunteer Boulevard.

It was all about celebrating the Vols, scoping out the recently redeveloped Cumberland Avenue, and fulfilling the hope of being in the right place at the right time to get a “pop up” prize.

Those odds were pretty likely, thanks to the Cumberland Avenue Merchants Association members. UT fans had a chance at more than $3,000 worth of prizes, including:

The parade route was adjusted in 2017 to include Cumberland Avenue after it was completely reopened following a $25 million streetscape project.

Pop Up Prize

The merchants along the corridor have been actively growing, even creating an initiative called CAMA Cares in which businesses pledge to clean along Cumberland Avenue 10-15 minutes daily.

Next month, CAMA will host Jack Neely from the Knoxville History Project to talk about Cumberland Avenue’s unique history. This event will take place at 3:00 PM on Wednesday, December 5th in the auditorium of the Knoxville Museum of Art; free parking is available on site.
