Mayor Rogero, Chief Sharp Welcome Largest Academy Recruit Class
Mayor Madeline Rogero and Chief Stan Sharp welcomed the Knoxville Fire Department’s largest academy recruit class on Monday, Oct. 22.
From veterans of various branches in the military, to veterans of the City Fire Department’s Explorer program; from locals, to out of state residents, to immigrants from two other continents, this group of 34 recruits boasts diverse backgrounds.
They will undergo 15 weeks at the academy before being deployed to serve the community. During training, the recruits will undergo.extensive training in vehicle extraction, hazardous materials response as well as firefighting.
Much of fire safety and emergency response is about preventative efforts. The Fire Department responded to 23,804 calls for service in 2017. Emergency Medical Service calls for service totaled 10,456, and non-EMS calls for service totaled 13,303.
The department has 327 full-time career professional firefighters and maintains 42 fire suppression and rescue units in the City's 19 fire stations. The stations are staffed 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
