Parks and Rec Employee Kathleen Gibi Wins National Award!
Kathleen Gibi NLC AwardCongratulations to Kathleen Gibi!

On Thursday, Nov. 5, at the National League of Cities' annual conference, Gibi -- a Public Affairs Specialist with the City's Department of Parks and Recreation -- received the NLC's Most Dedicated City Staff Award for her commitment to addressing childhood obesity in Knoxville.

Gibi, who has been with the City since starting as an intern 16 years ago, has led the City's participation in the Let's Move! fitness and nutrition program started by First Lady Michelle Obama. Knoxville has received national recognition for those efforts, and since the 2009-10 school year, the percent of overweight or obese students screened in Knox County Schools has dropped from 38% to 33.2%.

Mayor Madeline Rogero gave a presentation on the City's Let's Move! programs Thursday at the NLC conference, being held this year in Nashville. She noted Gibi's leadership and dedication to the efforts.

Gibi received the award from Clifford Johnson, Executive Director of NLC's Institute for Youth, Education and Families.
