Downtown Parking Tip Sheet: Feb. 1

A little snow and frigid temperatures have only slightly changed the scene downtown, but the parking situation remains the same. Read the latest on the State Street Garage construction project, which will add 570 new parking spaces to downtown’s landscape by Summer 2019.

A lane of northbound State Street is now closed, as the crane is now in place for continuing construction on the garage’s west side, but at least one lane is open on S. Central Street from Summit Hill Drive.

Now that Central is open again, it’s smooth sailing from Summit Hill Drive to free, after-hours and weekend parking at Dwight Kessel garage, a valid contender for your new, go-to east-of-Gay parking destination. Additional city-owned garages that are also free after 6 p.m. include Locust Street, Market Square, Langley/Summer Place, City County Building and Main Street. Downtown visitors are encouraged to use available resources, like the Parkopedia app or DowntownKnox.org/parking to find parking locations.

This weekend:

Friday: All weekend, the Knoxville Convention Center is hosting the Dogwood Arts House and Garden show to inspire you for spring weather and home improvements.

WDVX’s First Friday Live at the Visit Knoxville Visitor Center hosts a free concert with singer-songwriters Jay Clark and Greg Horne from 6-7 p.m.

Knoxville Museum of Art hosts its Alive After Five live music series, 6-8:30 p.m. This week’s artist is a Steely Dan tribute known as The Fine Colombians.

Friday is First Friday, and many galleries will have opening receptions, including Rala in the Old City, which is hosting a rare show by beloved Knoxville artist Cynthia Markert.

Parking spaces will be in high demand at our Civic Center, as the Ice Bears play the Fayetteville Marksmen at the Knoxville Civic Coliseum at 7:30 p.m. and the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra performs music from the film Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban at the Auditorium.

Rogers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella has the first of its four-show run at the Tennessee Theatre at 7:30 p.m. (Additional performances are 2 and 7:30 p.m. Saturday, and 1:30 p.m. Sunday.)

Saturday: Chocolatefest Knoxville will be held at the recently remodeled World’s Fair Exhibition Hall (park-side ground level of the Holiday Inn). 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.

The KSO performs a 1:30 p.m. matinee of its Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban concert.

Yonder Mountain String Band plays the Bijou Theatre at 8 p.m. Free parking is available just a hop, skip and a jump away at the Dwight Kessel garage.

Sunday: The final day of the Dogwood Arts House and Garden show winds up at 5 p.m. at the Knoxville Convention Center. The venue will also host famed forensic anthropologist Dr. Bill Bass and his presentation “Exhumation of the Big Bopper” at 1 p.m.

During the week: The Bijou Theatre hosts Joe Jackson on Tuesday, Feb. 5, at 8 p.m. and Fred Armisen on Wednesday, Feb. 6, also at 8 p.m.
