Axle Logistics Creating Jobs, Moving Into Long-Vacant Building on N. Central
Construction to begin soon on Axle Logistics' new HQ, 835 N. Central St.

Check out these photos from last week’s kickoff celebration by Axle Logistics of its $13 million build-out of its new headquarters at 835 N. Central St.

The company’s investment is noteworthy, for several reasons: Axle Logistics is hiring 50 new employees immediately, with another 200 in the next five years. And it chose Downtown North and the historic Hull-Dobbs Building as the location for its new HQ.

The long-vacant building was formerly a Ford dealership.

Mayor Indya Kincannon joined the Axle Logistics team at its Feb. 25, 2020 pre-construction kickoff celebration.

Mayor Indya Kincannon praised the walkability and vitality of the Central and Broadway corridors, and thanked Axle Logistics for taking the lead in bringing the long-vacant 32,000-square-foot building (a car dealership decades ago) back into reuse. The 100-year-old building has lots of character and unique features, including floor-to-ceiling windows that illuminate the interior with natural light.

Mayor Kincannon said the City is proud to be able to support the company’s expansion through a $200,000 commitment from the Historic Preservation Fund and a 15-year Payment in Lieu of Taxes (PILOT) agreement that helped make the redevelopment project possible.

Working collaboratively with businesses and residents, the City has invested heavily along the Broadway and Central corridors and in the surrounding neighborhoods for the past decade.

Some of those City investments include the $6 million Central Streetscape Project and numerous Commercial Façade Grant Program projects.

The Commercial Façade Grant Program actually began in this area, when Emory Place and the Broadway / Central intersection underwent a series of major upgrades. Recent façade projects include popular neighborhood gathering places – Elkmont Exchange and the Press Room. Other projects include Kybra Gym, Paramount Cleaners, Part Time Antiques, offices at 902 Central St., and the Central Collective.

Congratulations to the Axle co-founders Jon Clay and Drew Johnson on their new digs and for creating a few hundred new jobs in North Knoxville.
