KPD Starts Next Academy with 20 Recruits and Cadets
This morning (Monday, Oct. 15), 20 recruits and cadets kicked off their first day of a 22-week academy program to become officers in the Knoxville Police Department.
Chief Eve Thomas welcomed the group, then joined Mayor Madeline Rogero and KPD command staff in individually meeting each recruit and cadet.
Once the recruits graduate from the academy, they will enter another 22-week program working alongside a KPD field training officer.
In addition to the 14 recruits, vetted through KPD’s regular hiring process, the group also included six cadets, who are younger than 21 and can't yet meet Tennessee’s age requirement of 21 years of age for serving as a law enforcement officer.
After completing both the academy and field training over more than 10 months, the recruits will be issued their badges and begin serving in Knoxville’s police force. The cadets will be placed in office and traffic positions until they reach the age to serve as officers.
