Open Streets: Fulton High School Students 'Go Forth to Serve'

Thousands attended Bike Walk Knoxville’s 7th installment of Open Streets, which was held on a segment of Broadway Avenue between Glenwood Avenue and Emory Place.

The street was closed to vehicles along the one-mile route for the event from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday. More than 60 activity stations offered unique fun and games for pedestrians and cyclists to enjoy.

Twelve volunteers from Bike Walk Knoxville worked to make the event happen (with help from the Knoxville Police Department closing off the segment of road).

Such an undertaking calls for assistance from volunteers, and that’s just what juniors and seniors from Fulton High School did for the Open Streets Event.

Students engaged in technical programs at the school added extra man-power for the event:

  • Broadcasting students covered live broadcasting on the school’s WKCS 91.1 radio station and also filmed video footage including interviews;

  • Cosmetology students did free face painting; and

  • Construction students built a large letter “F” (for Fulton, obviously) from which kids could take photos and do crafts.

Ara Rickman, Career and Community Coordinator for Fulton High School, said that this was an effort to allow the students to apply their technical skills in a real life situation and also learn the value of volunteering.

"We have a motto at Fulton High that challenges our students to 'Enter to learn, go forth to serve,'" Rickman said. "This was a great way to give back, be involved in the community, and showcase the great things happening with our students at Fulton."

Open Streets is traditionally held twice a year—once in the fall, and once in the spring. For more information, visit www.OpenStreetsKnoxville.com
