Downtown Parking Tip Sheet: Jan. 4
Happy New Year! It’s 2019, and the landscape of downtown parking looks only slightly different from last year.

Construction continues on the State Street Garage, reducing available parking spaces for the time being but ultimately adding 570 parking spaces to the garage by next summer. South Central Street remains closed to through traffic, although there is a detour that will guide drivers around the closure.

Downtown visitors are encouraged to use available resources, like the Parkopedia app or DowntownKnox.org/parking to find the many downtown lots, garages and on-street spaces that are free after 6 p.m. and/or on weekends. Garages include the Dwight Kessel, Locust Street, Market Square, Langley/Summer Place, City County Building and Main Street garages.

This weekend:

Friday: It’s the first First Friday of 2019, which means lots of downtown shops and galleries will host openings. Among those venues is the Bijou Theatre, hosting a show by artist Reid Hartsell starting at 5:30 p.m.

WDVX’s First Friday Live concert series presents Big Country’s Empty Bottle on the stage at the Knoxville Visitors Center. Admission is free, and the show will be broadcast live on WDVX FM and WDVX.com

Performances of the Broadway musical Les Miserables continue this weekend at Tennessee Theatre, with shows at 8 p.m. Friday, 2 and 8 p.m. Saturday and 1:30 p.m. Sunday.

Theatre Knoxville presents On Golden Pond with performances at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday and a 3 p.m. Sunday matinee. Plenty of free parking is available nearby under I-40 at the corner of Gay Street and Magnolia Avenue. Here's a map and directions

Knoxville Ice Bears vs. Birmingham Bulls. Knoxville Civic Coliseum, 7:30 p.m.

Saturday:  Paul Belcher presents Battle of Songs featuring gospel performing artists the McKameys, Karen Peck and New River, Michael Combs, and The Williamsons at the Knoxville Civic Auditorium, starting at 6 p.m.

Knoxville Ice Bears vs. Birmingham Bulls. Knoxville Civic Coliseum, 7:30 p.m.

Season 4 star of RuPaul's Drag Race Latrice Royale performs with Chris Hamblin on piano and The Knoxville Gay Men’s Chorus, 8 p.m. Bijou Theatre.

Sunday: The Pink Bride Wedding Show is 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Knoxville Convention Center. The Locust Street Garage is the most convenient for free parking and easy access to the Convention Center.

During the week:

Four Leaf Peat is the special guest at January’s free Mighty Musical Monday concert on Monday, Jan. 7, at noon at the Historic Tennessee Theatre. If traditional Irish music is your thing, you’ll get a kick out of these guys and jump start your new year. Because parking in the nearby State Street Garage is so limited, we encourage Mighty Musical Monday attendees with mobility issues to arrive early and be dropped off at the theater's Gay Street entrance.
